Russian Chocolate with Soul: Kostromskaya Snegurochka and Brand’s Path to International Recognition

October 2, 2025
Merenga confectionery factory (Karameliya LLC) in Kostroma has been in business since 1946 and has become one of the most recognizable factories in Russia. Today, it manufactures over 150 types of sweets, including marshmallows, marmalade, pastille, gingerbread, cookies, and, since 2023, chocolate. A special place belongs to Kostromskaya Snegurochka chocolate brand. This is more than just about confectionery, it's part of the Russian fairytale tradition, beloved both in Russia and far beyond.

The chocolate is packaged in a special package with a vibrant image of Snegurochka, the symbol of the Russian New Year and the beauty of the Kostroma region. This emphasis on tradition and festive design helps the product stand out from the competition and make it a particularly desirable gift.

The company began exporting its products in 2016, initially focusing on the CIS countries, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The geography gradually expanded to Georgia, Moldova, and Azerbaijan, and China, one of the world's most promising chocolate markets.

"In China, classic plain bars are popular, but demand is also growing for special flavors, such as cranberry or green tea, as well as chocolate with probiotics and vitamins. In our new products, created specifically for our customers, we combine a delicate filling with pieces of juicy fruit and crunchy nuts, following the multi-sensory trend," company's management.

Collaboration with Russian Export Center (REC, VEB Group) has given the company additional impetus for developing its foreign economic activity. On My Export platform, Karameliya has received support in participating in international exhibitions and finding new partners. For example, its products are already featured in national pavilions in Vietnam and the UAE. Agreements have also been signed with trading companies from Serbia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Negotiations are currently underway with Chinese and Armenian partners. The company recently received the Made in Russia certificate.

"For us, Made in Russia certificate is a seal of quality that helps build trust with international customers and open new markets. We want our chocolate to become more than just a treat, but a cultural symbol of Russia, loved and appreciated around the world."

The company also prioritizes environmental protection—its chocolate is packaged in paper. This helps preserve the environment and meets the expectations of modern consumers, who increasingly value not only taste but also eco-friendliness.

Karameliya plans to expand its chocolate product portfolio, actively developing export, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, and focusing on innovative and healthy products. Regular participation in exhibitions helps it maintain contact with customers and discover new ideas.

Made in Russia certificate is an official document confirming the high quality of products manufactured in the Russian Federation. To obtain the certificate, companies do not need to undergo additional checks by Russian Export Center. They simply need to submit an application on the REC website, upload the required documents electronically, and sign the automatically generated form. More detailed information about the program and the requirements for obtaining the certificate can be found on the REC official website.
