Made in Russia Regatta: How Sport Helps Promote Domestic Export on the Global Market

Export regatta under the Made in Russia national brand took place on August 24 at the Krylatskoye Rowing Canal in Moscow. Held as part of the Russian Rowing Championship, it brought together business, sport, and diplomacy to promote domestic products internationally. The event, aimed at establishing business contacts, sharing experiences, and supporting domestic manufacturers, was organized by Russian Export Center (REC, VEB Group).

The regatta was attended by representatives of large and small businesses, embassies of more than 20 countries, Russian government agencies, and ambassadors of the Made in Russia brand.

"Sport and export have much in common. Sport is a space for trust where relationships are forged, whether you're a professional athlete or an amateur pursuing a healthy lifestyle. It fosters a desire to collaborate, both in team competitions, like our regatta today, and in professional endeavors," Veronika Nikishina, General Director, REC.

The main event was a business breakfast with the ambassadors of China and the United Arab Emirates. During the meeting, prospects for developing cooperation and new opportunities for expanding export were discussed. The meeting allowed strengthening business relations and building a constructive dialogue on international trade issues.

Inna Svyatenko, Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairperson of the Federation Council, emphasized the strategic importance of such initiatives. "Russian Export Center opens up opportunities for Russian regions, including the most remote ones, to present unique Russian products and folk-art items, embodying the country's cultural heritage, on the international market."

We greatly value our collaboration with Russian Export Center and sincerely hope to further expand our cooperation in multiple areas. Working as a team, we can set new records. In fact, we have already set them. Thanks to a fruitful partnership between REC and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the number of foreign participants in our Made in Russia export regatta has doubled this year," Georgy Kuznetsov, Deputy Director of the State Protocol Department, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A key part of the regatta was the presentation of products from companies promoted under the Made in Russia program. Participants were able to learn about the product range and innovative solutions offered by Russian manufacturers. A food tasting allowed guests to appreciate the quality of domestic foods.

In particular, the following export brands were presented:

Millennium, LeberTM, manufacturer of kids’ playgrounds known for its high quality and active export activities.

Il Mio Morozhenko, IceCroTM, manufacturer of protein ice cream that doesn't raise blood sugar, creamy ice creams and berry sorbets that meet state standards, as well as a line of vegan products and healthy ice cream with vitamins and probiotics.

Moscow Region beverage company, BloomteaTM, manufacturer of refreshing and healthy kombucha with probiotics, low sugar, and natural ingredients.

Nutricionika, manufacturer of health and beauty products under the Health CodeTM.

Sport activities included rowing boat races.

"The national brand has an important mission. It strengthens our country and enhances our presence globally," Alexey Svirin, President of the Russian Rowing Federation.

Export regattas organized by Russian Export Center have also become a regular and important part of the strategy for promoting domestic products. These events initially emerged as an innovative format, combining sporting competitions with business forums and training sessions for exporters.

Since 2023, various regattas have been held under the auspices of Russian Export Center, including the unique On Heels sports and educational regatta in Novosibirsk dedicated to women-exporters. The events allowed the participants to develop negotiation skills, strengthen business ties, and enhance the international competitiveness of domestic companies.

For reference, Made in Russia is being implemented as part of the International Cooperation and Export national project under the coordination of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade. Russian Export Center is the primary program implementer. In 2025, the Russian Government, at the instruction of the President, approved an update to the program, expanding the range of available promotional tools. The new features include Made in Russia festivals and fairs, which expand opportunities for the display and sale of various product categories, including food, children's goods, handicrafts, and much more.

According to Veronika Nikishina, Russian Export Center plans to continue holding export regattas in the future, as they help strengthen export potential of Russian companies and enhance the national brand.

The regatta was held with the support of the Russian Ministry of Sport, the Russian Ministry for the Development of the Far East, the State Protocol Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Russian Rowing Federation.
